Double Entry Journal # 3

Quote:

David Crystal, the author of “Txtng: The Gr8 Db8,” told me in an e-mail message that “there’s nothing in texting to suggest spelling reform,” noting that texting relies heavily on abbreviations, which he sees as creative stylings, not systematic improvements. He added that there is very little that is new about most of the abbreviations and lexical shortenings that make texting so maddening to so many. ( Shea January 22, 2010)

Response:

Technology does play an important role in communication today. However, there are many problems that have come about with the development of the text message language. I feel that the most important problem is with the English language proficiency. I feel that with the English language proficiency it is necessary to have the skills to write with grammatical, syntactical, and semantic roles of the standard English language. I think that most of these most basic skills of the English language can not be completely comprehended and used effectively when people use only text message language. I feel that people using the text message language also have a limited vocabulary that is often marked with misspelled words because they do not take the time to learn the correct grammar spelling since the text message language contains only just a few abbreviations of the word. My greatest concerns is about how the future generations are going to do without correct  spelling and grammar skills.

Learning Style and Picture

Through the learning style test I have learned that I have a mild read-write learning style. I prefer to perceive and process information through reading and writing. As a reading and writing learner I use books as a means of artistic enjoyment and expression. When listening to a lecture, I process the auditory experience by writing down alot of notes. Some tips to improve my reading -writing learning style are to rewrite the texts in my own words so that I can understand topics better and to reread my notes and textbooks many times to improve my learning style. I do feel that the learning style test was pretty accurate because I am a strong reader that enjoys reading literature alot and I do take many notes in my lecture classes.

Double Entry Journal # 2

Quote:

"Video games provide the learner with real environment that gives the students chance to stimulate what they want to learn. Now, there are many examples of using the video games in school. According to BBC News many educators do not use video games in learning. They think this kind of technology is only for fun and does not benefit their children. This point of view is wrong. According to many researchers, children can learn more effectively when they play video games than when they read books. Dr. David Lewis conducted a research on the MediEvil 2 historical game which is about the history of Victorian London. He found that the children can understand this story better by playing the game more than by reading the book" (BBC News, 2000).

Response:

I think that using video games in the classroom is a great idea. I feel that video games do have some educational value that could benefit many students. These video games could be used to meet the needs of all types of learner from the visual learner, kinesthetic learner and the auditory learner. I think that video games do combine all kinds of digital content like text, images, video, music and software. These can be used to teach many skills such as building language literacy, counting skills, motor coordination skills, critical thinking and problem solving skills. For me I feel there is one added benefit to using video games in the classroom, these video games can also promote team work among students.

Quote:

"We can’t keep preparing students for a world that doesn’t exist. We can’t keep ignoring the formidable cognitive skills they’re developing on their own. And above all, we must stop disparaging digital prowess just because some of us over 40 don’t happen to possess it." ( Heffernan, August 7, 2011)

Response:

I think that many children of today's society use laptops, cell-phones, social networking sites to connect to the world around them. Why are these student of today are not waiting to be taught how to use these skills? It is because most of these skills required for such success are not included in many school system through out America. I think one of the most important things we can do is to empower the students of today's society by bringing digital technology learning into the classrooms. I feel that if we as a society fail to bring digital technology into the classroom then we will fail to produce students that are capable of functioning in a technologically advanced world.
