Double Entry Journal # 4

Quote:

"Creating digital stories is a perfect opportunity to engage students in media literacy in learning about how the media influence our perceptions of the world ( Goodman, 2003; Tyner 1998). Stories are enjoyable because we give ourselves over to them; this is also what makes them dangerous ( Kay, 1996). By their very nature, stories require us to suspend our disbelief and be swept away by their narrative. ( Ohler December 2005/ January 2006)

Response:

I think that digital storytelling is a fantastic way to engage students in learning. I believe that digital storytelling can be used to combine all the different learning styles of visual, auditory, and kinesthetic because it offers them a mixture of digital graphics, texts, audio narration, video and music. Through the use of digital storytelling students could express personal emotions that can gain attention in a society where digital technology is so very important. Also the students could communicate a valuable message to their audience by providing them with illustrated points and by making the content memorable. What I find the most interesting about using digital storytelling is that offers the students a chance for collaboration and team work. With digital storytelling the students are having fun but they are learning they just don't even know it because they become so invested in their storytelling that they recall all the skills they are learning. I feel when learning can be fun it has the possibility for greatness.
