Double Entry Journal # 13

I chose to do my WebQuest on Goldilocks and the three bears because it is a classic fairy tale that I have enjoyed since I was kid. I have used Goldilocks and the three bears in many lessons over the years for my preschoolers so I thought why not try a WebQuest with the fairy tale. I thought that by using it as a WebQuest I could make it more fun and interesting by adding the new technologies that I have learned over the semester. So far it has made for a new and creative way of letting the bears have a say about Goldilocks being in their house. The video I have on my introduction page I choose because it was very detailed in tell the story of Goldilocks and the three bears it had a combination of the interactive story that is being read aloud but also has the complete text on the bottom of the screen for the kids to follow.

Double Entry Journal # 12

  1. Which two of example WebQuests are the best ones? Why?
I think that the WebQuest Grow School Greens was one of the best because it offered the students a chance to see their project develop over time and it showed them that all of their participation was needed to make the project successful. The other WebQuest that I thought was one of the best was Underground Railroad because it gave the students a chance for fun by allowing them to act out their researched roles.

2.Which two are the worst? Why?
I thought that the WebQuest Ancient Egypt was one of the worst because it required alot of research that was not even needed to complete the project. The other WebQuest that I thought was the worst was Ice Cream WebQuest because even though it seems fun their was not alot of critical thinking and research going on.

3.What do best and worst mean to you?
The best to me means that it provides the students with an opportunity to learn something new in a fun and creative way while promoting collaboration and interaction among their peers. The worst to me means that the project is done on a more individually level and that students do not really get alot of feed back or learn new skills or concepts.

WebQuest Worksheet

My Role:

Affiliator

WebQuest
Strengths
Weaknesses
Grow School Greens
It relies a lot on group participation and consensus. Every group member has a job in the project and they must collaborate and work together to make it succeed.
No real weakness

It’s a group project that offers a lot of collaboration like interviews, several group discussions, group presentation and poster.
Each member researches a different famous person and they do not share the information until after
Underground Railroad
Emphasizes a lot of group woke and collaboration among group members. Also allows for group interaction by giving them a chance to act out their researched role
Students research their roles individually
Ice Cream
A lot of cooperation among the groups on deciding the flavor of ice-cream
Worksheet is done individually
Ancient Egypt

Web 2.0 Tools Questions

  1. Choose a tool that could be used in the classroom.
The tool I choose to use in the classroom is MeeHive

       2.  Describe the tool.
This tool is used for creating you own personalized newspaper. It lets you talk about what is happening in your world and about the topics that are interesting to you. This tool also lets you read news articles, blogs, editorials, and watch videos about your interest anytime that you want.

       3. What content area would you use the tool?
I would use this tool for the content area of writing and english.

      4. Briefly describe a lesson in which you would implement the tool.
I would have the class produce their own newpaper. First I would have each student find something that is interesting to them to write about. Then I would have them been gathering information from other sources such as articles, interviews, etc on the subject that they choose to write about. Then have them organize and edit the information that they gathered and begin writing their article for the newspaper. After all the students have completed their articles you can use the MeeHive tool to produce the students newpaper.

      5. What do you need to consider before using the tool in a classroom?
Before using this tool you would need to consider what topics you think would be and would not be approiate for the students to write about. Also need to consider the age group for which the tool is being used and you need to make sure that you have access to computers for the students to put the newspaper together.

Double Entry Journal # 11

The three things that I learned from watching the video "Thinking Creatively: Teachers as Designers of Content, Pedagogy and Technology" are first that Pedagogy and Content are messy when on there own but if we combine them we can make them easier to understand and by combining them we also makes it easier to understand how subject matters are put together for teaching. The second thing that I learned is that Quality Teaching is the Transformation of Content and that just because someone is an expert in their field of  study this does not mean that they would be a good teacher. The last thing I learned is that Technology is evolving so rapidly that some teachers can not keep up with it. I think this is why many teachers became frustrated with using technology in the classroom.

Double Entry Journal #10

Quote:

"In today’s rapidly changing world, people must continually come up with creative solutions to unexpected problems. Success is based not only on what you know or how much you know, but on your ability to think and act creatively. In short, we are now living in the Creative Society"( Resnick, 2007).

Response:
I think that the ability to think creatively is needed for success in today's society and for future generations. As it says in the article the world is rapidly changing and as it does we need to produce students that are both effective learners and have the ability to think critically and creatively. I believe the old saying of " thinking outside the box" should be encouraged in our students of today. We live in a digital world one where technology in the classrooms can be used to promote creativity among our students. So by encouraging this creativity and giving the students freedom to express their thoughts and ideas we are giving them the ability to succeed not only in education but the ability to succeed in life.

"What parents should be far more concerned about is the relatively pitiful amount of learning going on in our classrooms. As the statistics clearly show, this is a worldwide disgrace. And its clearly not the fault of the kids. Children instinctively want to learn,  and are drawn to the places where learning actually happens- such as their video and computer games. Infact, game playing kids learn so much it often intimidates their teachers"(Prensky, 2002).

Response:

I think that Prensky claim of parents needing to be more concerned about the pitiful amount of learning in the classroom than about learning with video games is a good point. I think that with today's standards of education like the No Child Left Behind, students are not receiving a in depth learning experience in the classroom anymore because most teachers do not have enough time to cover every subject at an in depth level and still meet their state required standards. I am not all blaming teachers for this. One reason that I think teachers do not use the video game technology available is because they feel that the way they have been teaching for years works, so why change. However most kids in today's society are technology learns, so I do think that more in depth learning can come from teachers of today and future generations investing in the learning the technologies equipment that can offer the student a chance to learn new skills but be able to enforce the ones that they already have been taught without putting the teacher behind in meeting her standards. It's the point to motivate and inspire are students to learn and if it takes video games to do that I say why not ( Prensky, 2002).

Double Entry Journal # 8

Quote:

"Video games will provide sets of challenges until certain actions, behaviors and skills become routine and automated. The games then provide a new problem in the form of a boss, new level or game mechanic that makes the gamer re-think their mastery, learn a new skill and then integrate this skill into the rest of the experience. This is where mastery is consolidated through repetition only to be challenged again, and it is an integral part of learning and expertise" ( 10 Things Schools Can Learn From Video Games).

Response:

I would have to agree that using video games in the classroom is a good idea. I believe that whenever a student plays a video game whether it be an educational game or a fighting game learning is happening constantly even if the student is not aware of it. I think that using video games offer them a chance to practice using their skills of logic, critical thinking, sequencing, and their other motor skills over and over again because if they play the same game over and over the skills they learn become second nature to them. Video games also offer different purpose and a varying level of usefulness when it comes to learning. One purpose I find very useful is that students can learn to handle cultural issues and to deal with different people and roles in their everyday life. So I can not find a reason why students should not use video games that both capture their attention and offers them a variety of learning skills that will only improve their futures.

My Think Aloud

Double Entry Journal # 7

Quote:

"We know now that dyslexia is about so much more than just mixing up letters — that many dyslexics have difficulty with rhythm and meter and word retrieval, that they struggle to recognize voices and sounds. It’s my profound hope that our schools can use findings like these to better teach children who struggle to read, to help them overcome their limitations, and to help them understand that it’s not their fault."(Schultz,2011)

Response:
I believe that some students with dyslexia are often left behind in school because they are not properly diagnosed. I think that there are some teachers who see a dyslexic student as an underachiever due to their lack of what may look like carelessness or lack of effort. I feel that it is the teachers responsibility to provide an environment that is conductive to learning for all students whether they are dyslexic or not. Many students with Dyslexia just need a new and creative way to learn the same material as their peers. I think that the school systems should provide a curriculum for dyslexic students that is on the same educational level as non dyslexic students but that offers them several different resources to use when learning the material. I believe that by doing this it could greatly improve their learning ability.

Double Entry Journal # 6

Quote:

"There is no better way to understand and experience the diversity and commonality of humanity than through art. At the heart of art's contribution is improved attitudes toward self, citizenship, and community. Art increases our understanding of the breadth and the depth of humanity, including not only cultural awareness but also personal growth." (Ohler,2000)

Response:

I believe that art is an important part of the educational curriculum and it can also offer the students a great way to express themselves. Through art they get a chance to explore other ways of life, different races and genders, and it offers them a better understanding of the cultural diversities present in our society. I think that art also offers them artistic expression in which they can find self reflection so that the students can explore their sense of self and share their life experiences. I think art is the process of creating new idea's and promoting growth within the students by letting them use visual expression to express their feelings with having to put them into words. I feel that if art was not a part of the educational curriculum many students would not have this opportunity to express themselves concerning personal and social issues that are affecting their everyday lives.

My Voki

While listen to my Voki talk I realized I used the word meaningful alot in my reflection so I had to go chance some of my words. Another thing that I noticed is that I had some places where my sentence structure was not easy to understand and they really did not make sense so I had to go back and rewrite several sentences to get them to flow smoothly.

Deconstructing Arnold

1. What do you see?  (Describe the pictures, objects, colors, etc...)

On the first magazine cover of Arnold they used bright  colors of orange and yellow to grab your attention while he was dressed in very neutral colors of grey and black. The magazine used big font sizes again to capture your attention to the magazine. Lastly Arnold is the only person on the cover of the magazine so that he appear to be the center of attention as if saying exercise and look like me. On the second magazine cover of Arnold they used a different approach and used the traditional colors of America red, white, and blue. Arnold is then dressed in a sharp suit of black with a striking tie of red and white. The magazine used medium font size so not to take away from the picture of Arnold making him front and center. There was only one other picture on the cover and it was small, white and on the side of the magazine cover.

2.  How does he make you feel?

On the first magazine cover he makes me feel that exercising will get you great results and could possibly make you the center of attention, maybe even front page magazine cover. This cover also makes me feel that it empowers men to want to workout and  be the center of attention while it is not centered toward women wanting the same results . The second magazine cover makes me feel that he  wants to be trusted. He is using the American colors and pointing at you as if to say I want to know you and for you to trust me. I feel he's point is that how can you not trust me I'm an American.

3.  How do those "looks" influence how you feel?

The look on the first magazine cover influenced my feeling because he wasn't smiling and he was dressed like he was in a solemn mood and it made him seem unapproachable. It also  seemed like he wasn't having fun with said to me  that working out is serious business and should not be taken lightly. The look Arnold had on the second magazine cover is a lot more friendly and inviting. Arnold is smiling with perfect white teeth and dressed very nicely. I get the feeling that I am welcome to view this magazine as if I have been chosen to because Americans buy American products and from the magazine cover colors its all American.

3. What do you think about this person?

I'm not really sure that I have a positive or negative feel about this person. I feel that in each magazine cover he is just playing another role wanting people to like him and be influenced by him. I feel that neither is a true description of the type of person he is and what he really represents.

4. What lifestyles, values, points of view are represented or omitted?

One the first magazine cover the lifestyle that is being portrayed is that of the everyday man. I values that I feel that are being portrayed are that hard work does pay off and that anyone can look good if the exercise. The point of view on this cover states that exercising is not only health but the right way to live.  On the second magazine cover the lifestyle that is being portrayed is that of the wealth and political. The values that I feel are being portrayed are the money equal power and that he's inviting you into the inner circle of wealth. The point of view that is being represented is that it pays to be wealth and have political ties so that you can have the best that life has to offer in America.

 5.  What are the differences between the two covers? What techniques are used to attract your attention? Pay attention to body language, clothing, camera angle, lighting, color, eye contact, etc...

I think one differences between both covers is that they are  trying to reach different genders groups of people from different social classes. The first cover is geared toward men wanting to get muscular while the second cover is more geared to people in America whether they be male or female. In the first magazine cover they use bright colors, side view profile of Arnold, and they cover his eyes so you can't look into them. While the second magazine cover they use the traditional red, white and blue colors. It also has Arnold in a casual pose and looking inviting while smiling at the public.

Reading # 5

  1. Are there limitations to the amount of pictures, length of music, or video that can be used in a multimedia project?
The article states that " media and media messages can influence beliefs, attitudes, values, and behaviors." So I believe that there should be a limitations on the amount of photos, videos and music used in a multimedia project because these stories are all personal and they can provide people with compelling voices on topics. And so by using to many of these the story would began to lose its effectiveness as the visual and music would carry less meaning.

    2. Do you need to request permission from the orginal creator in order to use copyrighted material in a multimedia project for a school related assignment?

No, you do not need to request permission from the orginial creator. This is supported by two different examples of proof from the article. The first being that " these uses of media will not have significant copyright implications, either because the content in question has been licensed or because it is covered by one of the specific exemptions for teachers in Sections 110(1) and (2) of the Copyright Act." The second example of proof is "If challenged they would be more likely to recieve special consideration under the fair use doctrine because they occur within an educational settings."

    3. What are the general principles educators need to follow to ensure their digital story projects fall under fair use guidelines?

According to the article there are five general principles educators need to follow to ensure there projects fall under fair use guidelines. The first principle is " Employing Copyrighted Material In Media Literact Lessons - which is defined as choosing illustrative material from the full range of copyrighted sources and making them available to learners." The second principle that is stated is " Employing Copyrighted Material In Preparing Curriculum Materials - which is defined as you can integrate copyrighted material into curriculum materials." The third principle stated is " Sharing Media Literacy Curriculum Materials - defined as should be able to share effective examples of teaching about media and meaning with one another. The fourth principle states " Students Use Of Copyrighted Materials In Their Own Academic And Creative Work - defined as should be free to enable learners to incorporate, modify, and re-present existing media objects in their own classroom work." The fifth principle is "  Developing Audiences For Students Work - defined as educators should work with learners to make a reasoned decision about distribution that reflects sounds pedagogy and ethical values." So if you follow these guidelines then you will be using the fair use code.

4. Have you heard any  of the eight myths listed in the reading, if so, are you surprised with the truth?

Out of the eight myths in the article I was surprised by the truths of two of them. The first being the myth of " Fair Use Could Get Me Sued" i would have thought that people would sue in order to get payment for something they did no matter why they were using it. The second myth that surprised me was " If I'm Not Making Any Money Off It, It's Fair Use. (And If I Am Making Money Off It, It's Not)" I would have thought that using someone else work even if not for money was not ok but it seems if they are used for "noncommerical use" then you are fine.

Educational App Reviews

Alphabet Car:
With this educational app you are in the drivers seat when you play. This educational app makes remembering letters and words fun with creative activities. The students uses the car to gather up letters and words as you drive along. The student gets to enjoy upbeat music and colorful 3D graphics while learning. This educational app offers more than 40 different levels of play including Preschool, Beginner, Intermediate, Advance and Expert. The student get to learn letters, words and spelling through interactive fun. I would use this educational app with spelling lessson. I would have the students drive the car and try to find the correct letters in their spelling words. Then they could use the word part to make sentences with their spelling words so that they could better understand the words meaning.I think that this educational app would be a great benefit when learning letters and words.

123 ABC'S Handwriting Fun:
This educational app offers a way to practice writing letters, numbers, and shapes. The student can trace the letters, hear the sounds of the letter, and shake to erase and do them again. It includes uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers 1-100, and fun shapes. The student can also choose the letters, numbers, or shapes randomly. I feel that this educational app could be used in Preschool through Second grade. I feel it would be useful when trying to teach students their letters, numbers, and shapes. It would provide them with hands on experience in a fun way when just tracing on a plain piece of paper is not as much fun.

Double Entry Journal # 4

Quote:

"Creating digital stories is a perfect opportunity to engage students in media literacy in learning about how the media influence our perceptions of the world ( Goodman, 2003; Tyner 1998). Stories are enjoyable because we give ourselves over to them; this is also what makes them dangerous ( Kay, 1996). By their very nature, stories require us to suspend our disbelief and be swept away by their narrative. ( Ohler December 2005/ January 2006)

Response:

I think that digital storytelling is a fantastic way to engage students in learning. I believe that digital storytelling can be used to combine all the different learning styles of visual, auditory, and kinesthetic because it offers them a mixture of digital graphics, texts, audio narration, video and music. Through the use of digital storytelling students could express personal emotions that can gain attention in a society where digital technology is so very important. Also the students could communicate a valuable message to their audience by providing them with illustrated points and by making the content memorable. What I find the most interesting about using digital storytelling is that offers the students a chance for collaboration and team work. With digital storytelling the students are having fun but they are learning they just don't even know it because they become so invested in their storytelling that they recall all the skills they are learning. I feel when learning can be fun it has the possibility for greatness.

Research Based Instructional Strategy

The research based instructional strategy that I read about was " Projecting Success" it was about a teacher that used digital camera in order to enhance her students learning skills. She first showed them pictures from her life and a story that she had written that was a published piece. She told them how her short story  had gotten rejected several times but that she never gave up on her writing. Though this strategy she had the students take pictures of their lives and write short stories about themselves answer several questions like how long would you write in a day and what type of things would you write about. While doing this the students not only learned to use digital camera but they learned to use writing to express themselves. How I would use this stragtey is to let the students take picture of things around them in the different seasons and then let them write poetry about what they see in the pictures of others. This would help them with their writing skills and their critical thinking skills as well.

Double Entry Journal # 3

Quote:

David Crystal, the author of “Txtng: The Gr8 Db8,” told me in an e-mail message that “there’s nothing in texting to suggest spelling reform,” noting that texting relies heavily on abbreviations, which he sees as creative stylings, not systematic improvements. He added that there is very little that is new about most of the abbreviations and lexical shortenings that make texting so maddening to so many. ( Shea January 22, 2010)

Response:

Technology does play an important role in communication today. However, there are many problems that have come about with the development of the text message language. I feel that the most important problem is with the English language proficiency. I feel that with the English language proficiency it is necessary to have the skills to write with grammatical, syntactical, and semantic roles of the standard English language. I think that most of these most basic skills of the English language can not be completely comprehended and used effectively when people use only text message language. I feel that people using the text message language also have a limited vocabulary that is often marked with misspelled words because they do not take the time to learn the correct grammar spelling since the text message language contains only just a few abbreviations of the word. My greatest concerns is about how the future generations are going to do without correct  spelling and grammar skills.

Learning Style and Picture

Through the learning style test I have learned that I have a mild read-write learning style. I prefer to perceive and process information through reading and writing. As a reading and writing learner I use books as a means of artistic enjoyment and expression. When listening to a lecture, I process the auditory experience by writing down alot of notes. Some tips to improve my reading -writing learning style are to rewrite the texts in my own words so that I can understand topics better and to reread my notes and textbooks many times to improve my learning style. I do feel that the learning style test was pretty accurate because I am a strong reader that enjoys reading literature alot and I do take many notes in my lecture classes.

Double Entry Journal # 2

Quote:

"Video games provide the learner with real environment that gives the students chance to stimulate what they want to learn. Now, there are many examples of using the video games in school. According to BBC News many educators do not use video games in learning. They think this kind of technology is only for fun and does not benefit their children. This point of view is wrong. According to many researchers, children can learn more effectively when they play video games than when they read books. Dr. David Lewis conducted a research on the MediEvil 2 historical game which is about the history of Victorian London. He found that the children can understand this story better by playing the game more than by reading the book" (BBC News, 2000).

Response:

I think that using video games in the classroom is a great idea. I feel that video games do have some educational value that could benefit many students. These video games could be used to meet the needs of all types of learner from the visual learner, kinesthetic learner and the auditory learner. I think that video games do combine all kinds of digital content like text, images, video, music and software. These can be used to teach many skills such as building language literacy, counting skills, motor coordination skills, critical thinking and problem solving skills. For me I feel there is one added benefit to using video games in the classroom, these video games can also promote team work among students.

"We can’t keep preparing students for a world that doesn’t exist. We can’t keep ignoring the formidable cognitive skills they’re developing on their own. And above all, we must stop disparaging digital prowess just because some of us over 40 don’t happen to possess it." ( Heffernan, August 7, 2011)

Response:

I think that many children of today's society use laptops, cell-phones, social networking sites to connect to the world around them. Why are these student of today are not waiting to be taught how to use these skills? It is because most of these skills required for such success are not included in many school system through out America. I think one of the most important things we can do is to empower the students of today's society by bringing digital technology learning into the classrooms. I feel that if we as a society fail to bring digital technology into the classroom then we will fail to produce students that are capable of functioning in a technologically advanced world.
